The short version
- It reads your own ChatGPT answers.To show whether ChatGPT mentioned and linked your website, and what it searched for and read.
- It all stays in your browser.No account, no analytics, no advertising. We only receive what you send with "Send to Romeo".
- You stay in control.Turn off the two optional lookups, delete any question, or delete everything in Settings.
Scope
This policy applies to the Chrome extension "RomeoSEO: AI Answer & AEO Inspector" (RomeoSEO Inspector), version 1.0.0 and later. It is made by the team behind RomeoSEO ("we"). Questions: team@romeoseo.com.
The extension reads your own ChatGPT conversations so it can show you whether ChatGPT mentioned and linked your website, and what it searched for and read to get there. Everything it reads is processed and stored in your browser. It makes three kinds of network request on its own, listed below, plus "Send to Romeo" when you press it. Nothing else leaves your browser.
What the extension reads
The extension runs only on chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com. On those pages it reads:
- the answer ChatGPT is streaming to you, to pick up the searches it ran; and
- the current conversation from ChatGPT's own API, using the ChatGPT session you are already signed in with.
From these it saves one answer at a time: your question, the answer text, the searches ChatGPT ran, the pages it read and their summaries, which pages it linked, the brands and products it named, map results, the reasoning summaries ChatGPT shows, the model you picked and the model that ran, your ChatGPT plan type when ChatGPT includes it, and whether the answer used your ChatGPT memory. It also keeps the conversation's ID so that checking the same conversation again updates the saved answer.
Your ChatGPT session token is used only inside the request to ChatGPT that reads the conversation. It is never stored, logged, or sent anywhere else. Logged-out ChatGPT chats cannot be read, because there is no session to read them with.
Where your data is stored
- Saved answers and settings are stored in your browser's extension storage (
chrome.storage.local) on your device. - Brand settings (brand names, your websites, other spellings of your brand and your competitors' websites; never your answers) are also stored in Chrome's extension sync storage (
chrome.storage.sync). If you are signed in to Chrome with sync turned on, Chrome syncs them to your other Chrome profiles through your Google account, under Google's privacy policy. If sync is off, they stay on this device. We never receive them. - Caches: how strong each site is (Ahrefs Domain Rating) is remembered for 30 days and Reddit thread stats for 7 days, on your device.
What leaves your browser
chatgpt.com and chat.openai.comAfter an answer finishes (and every few seconds, for up to 3 minutes, while a thinking answer is still unfinished), or when you open the side panel: your own session token to ChatGPT's own API, to read the current conversation.
api.ahrefs.comWhen the dashboard's "Sites to get featured on" page is shown and "Show how strong each site is" is on (it is on by default): site names only, at most 20 not already remembered at a time. No cookies.
www.reddit.comOnly when you click "Check thread" next to a Reddit thread, and "Show Reddit thread stats" is on (on by default): the public address of that thread. No cookies.
app.romeoseo.com (RomeoSEO, us)Only when you press "Send to Romeo" on a question: that question and what ChatGPT did for it, described in the next section. No cookies, never your ChatGPT session.
Nothing else. There are no analytics and no error reports. The only ways anything reaches RomeoSEO are "Send to Romeo" and the RomeoSEO links you click yourself, both described next. As with any web request, Ahrefs and Reddit can see your IP address and browser type when these requests are made; their own privacy policies apply to them.
Send to Romeo
The "What to do next" part of an answer has a "Send to Romeo" button. When you press it, and only then, the extension sends RomeoSEO:
- the question you asked ChatGPT, this answer and up to 4 earlier checks of the same question for the same brand;
- for each: what ChatGPT searched for, the pages it read and linked, what it read of your own pages and of the pages it linked instead, the brands it named, and the sentence that named you;
- your brand's own websites and the competitors you track.
It never sends your ChatGPT session, cookies or the full answer text. RomeoSEO keeps the results behind a one-time link that opens in a new tab. If nobody opens the link, the results are deleted after 3 days. Once you open it in your RomeoSEO account, they are kept with that account so Romeo can suggest work from them, under RomeoSEO's own privacy policy.
Links you click
- RomeoSEO links open a RomeoSEO page in a new tab, like any link. They appear in the side panel footer ("Fix this with RomeoSEO", always shown), the dashboard Overview, Settings and the downloadable report. When the brand you are on has a website, every one of these links opens app.romeoseo.com with that brand's first website in the address, so RomeoSEO can start looking at that site; without one they open romeoseo.com. All of them also carry tags that say the visit came from the extension and which link was clicked. Nothing is sent unless you click. What happens on RomeoSEO's site is covered by RomeoSEO's own privacy policy.
- "Ask ChatGPT" and "Ask again" open chatgpt.com in a new tab with the question filled in, and open the side panel next to it. Only when you click them.
- "Tell us about it" (shown when ChatGPT sends something the extension does not understand) opens your own email app with our address and a subject line filled in. Nothing is attached or sent unless you send it.
Files you create
Downloads (your answers as a spreadsheet, the report, the raw data of one answer for a bug report) and full backups are files you save yourself. They can contain your questions and ChatGPT's answers, so treat them like the conversations themselves. The raw data never includes your ChatGPT login. Restoring a backup only adds brands and answers; it never deletes what is already in the extension.
What we do not do
- We do not sell, rent or share your data. We only receive what you send with "Send to Romeo".
- We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, creditworthiness or anything unrelated to showing you how ChatGPT answered and what to do about it.
- The extension does not run on any other website, does not change ChatGPT's answers and does not block any request.
- The extension contains no remote code. Everything it runs is in the package published on the Chrome Web Store.
Your controls
In the extension's Settings you can:
- turn off "Show how strong each site is" (stops all requests to Ahrefs);
- turn off "Show Reddit thread stats" (stops all requests to Reddit);
- delete a brand's answers, or delete a brand;
- delete everything, which removes all the extension stored on this device and its synced brand settings.
You can also delete a single question from "Questions you checked". Uninstalling the extension removes its local data from your browser.
Retention
Saved answers and settings stay on your device until you delete them or uninstall the extension. Remembered site strengths expire after 30 days and Reddit thread stats after 7 days. Results sent with "Send to Romeo" are deleted after 3 days if their link is never opened.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anyone's data, children's included.
Changes and contact
If the extension's data handling changes, we will update this page and the date at the top before the new version is published. A change that sends data somewhere new will also be described in the extension's release notes.
