How it works
Enter your brand, your website and what you sell. We suggest three buyer questions; edit them or write your own.
Each question goes once to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, in US English, the way a person in the US would ask.
You get a grid of who named you and who linked to you, what each answer said, and the sites they cited instead.
What AI visibility means
More buyers now ask an AI assistant before they ever see a list of search results. They type "best CRM for a small sales team" into ChatGPT or Perplexity, read a short answer that names three or four products, and click one of them. If your brand isn't in that answer, you weren't in the running. AI visibility is simply how often you show up in those answers. People also call the work of improving it AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation); it's the same idea.
There are two ways to show up. You can be mentioned, where the answer says your name, or cited, where your website is one of the sources the answer links to. A mention puts you on the shortlist. A citation means the assistant read your page and trusted it enough to point to it, which is the stronger position and the one that sends visits.
How to read the results
The grid has one row per question and one column per assistant. Each cell says Cited, Mentioned, Not mentioned or No answer. Google only shows an AI Overview for some searches, so "No answer" in the Google column usually means there was no AI Overview to check, not that you were left out of one.
Open any cell's answer to see the passage around your name, or the start of the answer if you weren't in it, and the sites that answer cited. The list of cited sites below the grid is the most useful part for planning. Those are the review sites, comparison articles and forums the assistants read for your category. A mention on one of them reaches every assistant that reads it.
The "What AI says about you" tab asks about your brand directly: what it is, what it costs and whether it's any good. Read those answers for wrong prices, retired plans, missing features or a mix-up with a company with a similar name. Assistants repeat what they find, so a wrong fact usually traces back to an old page somewhere.
One check is a sample, not a score
AI answers are not fixed like a search ranking. Ask the same question twice and the list of recommended products often changes. Answers also differ by account, location, conversation history and the model version in use that day. This tool asks each question once, from the US, without your account's history, so treat the result as one honest sample.
To see a trend, run the same questions again a week or two apart and count how often you appear. (Within 7 days, the same check shows the saved result rather than asking again.) Being named in two of three runs is steady; one in three is a coin toss. That's also why we don't turn the result into a percentage or a grade: a number from one sample would look more precise than it is.
What moves the needle
- Be on the pages the assistants cite. If the same three review sites keep appearing in the sources, getting an accurate listing on them matters more than another post on your own blog.
- Answer the buying questions on your own site in plain sentences: who it's for, what it costs, how it compares. Assistants quote clear, self-contained answers.
- Keep facts consistent everywhere: your pricing page, your profiles on review sites and your company descriptions.
- Let AI crawlers in. If your robots.txt or firewall blocks them, they can't read your pages at all.
None of this is instant. Assistants re-read the web on their own schedule, so expect weeks, not days, before a fixed page shows up in answers.
Questions people ask
Which versions of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity does this check?
ChatGPT and Gemini answers are collected from their chat apps, the way a US user sees them, rather than from a developer API. Perplexity is asked through its Sonar model with web search on. Google's answer is the AI Overview on a normal US Google search. Your own account may show different answers because of your history and settings.
Why does it say I'm not mentioned when ChatGPT recommends me when I ask?
Answers vary from run to run and from person to person, and your own ChatGPT knows things about you from past chats. This tool asks once, without your history, closer to what a new buyer sees. Check again in a week or two to see how steady the result is.
How does it decide I was mentioned?
It looks for your brand name in the answer as a whole word, ignoring capitals, and treats "Acme CRM" and "AcmeCRM" as the same. It counts a citation when your website's domain is among the answer's sources. No AI judges the answers, so a brand name that's also a common word can be over-counted. Check the excerpts if yours is one.
Can I check my own ChatGPT answers regularly?
The free RomeoSEO Inspector Chrome extension is coming soon. It checks the answers ChatGPT gives you in your own account, as often as you like. Until then, this tool gives you five free checks a day.
Is this AI visibility checker free?
Yes. No signup. It asks real AI assistants, which costs us money per question, so it's limited to five checks a day per person and to the countries where RomeoSEO is open.
